Bharat Lok Shiksha Parishadb : innovative education methods

To banish illiteracy from the face of Tribal India and uplift the tribal sections of the society economically and socially, Bharat Lok Shiksha Parishad (BLSP) is working since 11 years to transform the face of remote tribal mountainous regions of the country.
To create awareness among citizens about the tragic realities of the persons dwelling in remote & rural areas of the country; to provide facilities such as education, health, empowerment in rural areas; income generation in villages; to provide equal opportunities without any discrimination of caste, creed, sex, religion and location; to build National Character amongst children and their families and mobilize resources to serve the rural & remote areas of the country are some of the objectives of BLSP.
One Teacher School (OTS) (Ekal Vidyalaya) is a non formal type of literacy method and it imparts education to the young ones at their doorsteps. In the mountainous regions or deep jungle villages where the light of learning has not yet reached, local youths are trained and motivated to accept the responsibility of taking a class of 35/40 children, between the age group of 5 to 12 years, everyday for three hours. The syllabus is well made to include nursery to primary standards of teaching and it includes playing, physical training, sanskar and patriotic songs. Songs, storytelling, games, art and yoga are the main attractions for the children. Ekal is a low cost model, best suited to rural conditions. A multi-tier system for administration of the schools is put into place.
Resources are provided by the people who are satisfied by the credible work of BLSP over the years. The financial requirement for running the OTS is so cost effective that people find it hard to believe. There is a continuous process of training of the workers at all levels. Wherever feasible and depending upon availability of land ,a number of small functional buildings have been constructed to accommodate these schools so that they can run unhindered during rains or other vagaries of nature. Otherwise the OTS are run in the open under large trees or in a room provided in his hut by a vanavasi. BLSP is working earnestly, hand-in-hand, to help raise the funds necessary to build 1,00,000 non-formal schools across the tribal belts by the year 2013.
Health education: Health, hygiene and cleanliness are taught to Ekal students and their parents, specially mothers. They are also told about preventive methods which includes the use of Neem and Tulsi leaves, benefits of boiled water, etc. WHO medicines are also provided.
Development education: For sustaining development, villagers and volunteers are trained in making vermin compost, fruit-tree plantation, vegetable cultivation, water management and animal husbandry. Care is taken that every Ekal school must have vermin compost bed for training Ekal students.
Empowerment education :Villagers and Ekal volunteers are informed about the government schemes and guided on how to avail them. During weekly assemblies, the teacher or Ekal volunteer teachers them about their rights, privileges and duties too.
